The Original™ Grape Tomatoes
Sue Zaina
We give our grape tomatoes plenty of attention to bring out their famous flavour.
Producing Perfection Fresh's iconic The Original™ grape tomatoes is a privilege for Queensland grower Sue Zaina.
Sue is a partner in Snapfresh Australia Pty Ltd - a family owned and operated business established in Bundaberg by Enio and Lydia Zaina. The Zainas, including sons Eddie, Morrie and Dennis and partners have produced some of Australia's finest vegetables for more than 50 years.
These baby vegie specialists also produce Broccolini® baby broccoli, baby red capsicums, Vine Sweet Minicaps® baby capsciums and stringless sugar snap peas for Perfection Fresh.
Snapfresh has grown The Original™ grape tomatoes since 2004 and has 97 hectares under cultivation, sending 2.6 million kilograms of the much-loved tiny tomatoes to market year `round - a far cry from just under one hectare sent the first year.
"We know our produce is good because people keep coming back for more," Sue says.
Perfection Fresh introduced The Original™ grape tomatoes to Australia in 1999 and while there are now others, this specialty line remains the only one with its specific flavour attributes.
"Grape tomatoes need plenty of care and attention to ensure the flavour and quality they're known for," Sue says.
"It takes about 12 weeks from seed to seedling and about the same from seedling to harvest, depending on the time of year and weather. Like all our baby lines, they are individually hand picked and are best when they are a glossy deep red. They are superb eaten just as they are."
Serving Suggestion
Toss halved The Original™ grape tomatoes with blanched fresh asparagus and drizzle with balsamic vinegar and cracked black pepper. My favourite!
