Facts about Royal Pom® pomegranates
Special features
Glossy scarlet-coloured Australian-grown Royal Pom® pomegranates
are perfectly round with a distinctive crown shape sprouting from
the fruit. The many chambers of a Royal Pom® pomegranate are filled
with soft and appealing edible seeds, or arils, nestled in a bed of
white membrane. Royal Pom® pomegranates are the Wonderful variety -
the most widely planted and highly regarded variety in the world
revered for its consistent sweet taste and juicy
goodness.
Flavour review
The jewel-like arils of Royal Pom® pomegranates exude a burst of
juiciness and a clean, sweet-sharp flavour. They can be eaten
fresh, squeezed or blended to produce a tangy, mildly astringent
juice.
Nutritional profile
Royal Pom® pomegranates contain polyphenols, some of nature's most
effective antioxidants which help protect against free radicals
which can damage the body over time.
Selecting the best
A non-climacteric fruit, Royal Pom® pomegranates are taste-tested
for ripeness in the orchard and do not ripen further after picking.
For a juicy, sweet pomegranate, choose unblemished fruit that is
heavy for its size. The larger the fruit, the better developed and
sweeter the flesh inside. If it feels heavy in the hand, it will
have plenty of juice.
Storage
Fresh, unopened pomegranates can last for many weeks, even months,
when kept in a non-humid environment, although refrigeration is
optional.
How to prepare a pomegranate
Cut off the crown, then cut the pomegranate into sections. Immerse
the sections in a bowl of water, then roll out the arils with your
fingers or a spoon. Discard everything else and strain the water.
Then eat the succulent arils whole, seeds and all. To juice, cut a
fresh pomegranate in half - just like a grapefruit - then use a
hand press citrus juicer. Strain the juice through a
cheesecloth-lined strainer or sieve.

Serving suggestions
Pomegranate arils are delicious eaten fresh, sprinkled in salads or
rice dishes, used to decorate cakes and desserts or as a star
ingredient in fruit and cheese platters. Tangy-sweet pomegranate
also marries well with lamb, beef, glazed ham or roast duck. Its
juice can be enjoyed as a healthy fresh beverage, used in sorbets,
marinades or hot or cold sauces.
