Beetroot
Hearty beetroot is a root vegetable with dark purple skin and firm flesh. It has a rich, earthy flavour with a mild, bitter edge.

Available from January to December.
Serving suggestion
Beetroot can be baked or steamed, grated for salads or cakes and juiced to create a refreshing drink. Its leavescan be used like spinach, cooked on their own as a side dish, or in soups, salads and sauces.
Did you know?
Some ancient civilisations regarded beetroot as an aphrodisiac. The still-standing brothel in Pompeii, (the city destroyed in 79 AD by volcano Mt Vesuvius), has a picture of a beetroot on its walls.
